Knowing that God was calling them to love hurting and vulnerable children, the Nelsons first answered the call in 2011 by becoming house parents to six boys at a youth home in America. Shortly thereafter, they knew that God was calling them to love and serve children in Africa. While praying about where they should go to serve long-term, an obscure little country called Swaziland came to their attention. They learned that this little country is home to over 120,000 orphans. The Nelsons took two short-term trips to Swaziland to gain greater insight and discernment about whether or not Swaziland was where they were being called. During those trips they saw the great need for child evangelism, discipleship, and orphan care and they realized that Swaziland was definitely where God was leading them.
Philip and Ashley moved to Swaziland as full-time Missionaries in June of 2016 and their ministry is called Hearts On Mission. The ministry serves the children of Swaziland in a variety of ways. They evangelize and disciple children through their weekly children’s gatherings called Pulse Bible Club. At club the children learn about God, His true word the Bible, and what it says & teaches about their need for a Savior through songs, games, and Bible lessons. The children are also given a nourishing meal at Pulse Bible Club, as well as times of encouragement and mentorship.
The Nelson’s desire for the children in Swaziland is for them to know that they are loved, that they are special, and that the temporary things in this world will never compare to the everlasting joy that a relationship with Christ will bring. They want for the children what God wants for everyone, which is to know Him and make His glory known to all the Nations. Their prayer is that hurting Swazi children will ultimately find satisfaction in the Creator, rather than in created things.
