Abner and Laura Solano

Abner and Laura Solano are serving at the Darío Christian Academy in Nicaragua. Supported by Compassion in Action, the school has grown to 380 Nicaraguan students from preschool through high school in the last 19 years. The school aims to build students’ character and instill Christian worldviews while fostering academic growth with the goal of alumni serving their families and community.

Abner’s sister, Narlly, along with her husband Julio Mendez, ran the school and welcomed Abner and Laura in the summer of 2019 to support the school as teachers. However, mid-way through 2023, it became clear that the Mendez family needed to take a sabbatical, leaving Abner as the director. In addition to leading the school, Abner leads a discipleship groups, teen Sunday School class, and mentors young men. Laura works in the reading program, the library, and teaches English.

Abner was born in Nicaragua but immigrated to the United States with his family when he was nine years old. His father planted and pastored Hispanic churches throughout eastern Washington state. After graduating from Heritage University, Abner became a teacher in the Dual Language Program in Kennewick. Students in his Kindergarten, 1st grade, and later Technology classrooms thrived, blossoming in the warmth of his genuine care and rising to meet his high standards.

Laura was raised in a missionary family, spending part of her childhood in Honduras. She studied education at Trinity Western University.

Abner and Laura married in 2008 and have two children, Abner Phillip and Carolina.
